Therasuit

TheraSuit Method® Intensive Program

TheraSuit Method Intensive Program is an intensive therapy program that accelerates functional progress. Children undergoing intensive therapy with the use of the TheraSuit® achieved better results in a shorter amount of time. (http://www.suittherapy.com/research.htm)

TheraSuit Method was modified by Izabela and Richard Koscielny (Physical Therapists and parents of a daughter with Cerebral Palsy) for people with disabilities in the USA since 1997. It was inspired by the original suit used by the Russian Space Program to counteract the harmful effects of weightlessness. TheraSuit is the only one of these kinds of devices in United States registered with Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and meeting all requirements and regulations.

TheraSuit Method® is a very holistic approach to treatment for those afflicted with neurological disorders like Cerebral Palsy, Developmental Delays, and Traumatic Brain Injuries.

The program uses the TheraSuit® (a soft canvas suit with bungee-like cords attached) and the Universal Exercise Unit to accelerate the child’s sensory processing and motor skills, through strength, flexibility, endurance, balance, coordination, proprioception, vestibular, and enhanced functional skill training. The unique combination of the Therasuit and the Universal Exercise Unit stimulates the brain to re-train the Central Nervous System.

What is the TheraSuit® and Universal Exercise Unit (UEU)?

The TheraSuit®, which has Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approval, is a soft, proprioceptive, dynamic orthosis consisting of a cap, vest, shorts, knee pads, and shoe attachments that are connected to each other through a system of elastic bands. It was inspired by the original suit used by the Russian Space Program to counteract the harmful effects of weightlessness and modified by physical therapists Izabela and Richard Koscielny to be used for people with disabilities. Elastic bands are used to properly align the body, support weak muscles and provide external stabilization. The bands can be adjusted for each child to provide the needed support or resistance. Therasuit is a safe, effective tool used in combination with our intensive exercise program and the UEU to accelerate the child’s progress.

The Universal Exercise Unit (UEU) is one of the greatest contributions of European rehabilitation developed in 1940s by a Polish Orthopedic Surgeon, Porfessor Dega, and was designed to strengthen weakened muscles. The UEU is a 400lbs metal construction equipped with pulleys/suspensions, weights, straps, and elastic cords. This dynamic system allows the child to isolate and strengthen desired muscle groups and improve specific, functional movement patterns.
